To say that 2016 has been interesting so far will be an understatement.
Due to the warm dry winter last year vineyards did not have a very good rest and the lack of groundwater caused most vineyards to bud unevenly.
It was the earliest harvest on record for Wildehurst Wines.
We harvested Chardonnay for bubbly based wine on the 8th of January. All in all harvest 2016 turned out to be very quick with most white cultivars being harvested in January and the red coming in early February. We finished with some beautiful stok-by-paal Mourvedre on the 18th of February (also the earliest finish in the history of Wildehurst Wines).
So far it looks like it will definitely be a year for the reds due to tiny berries packed with flavour.
Wish all of you could smell the red ferments in the Wildehurst cellar!
Interesting things that happened during the 2016 harvest.
Pinotage grapes saw the inside of the Wildehurst cellar for the very first time. We also dried a ton of Chenin Blanc grapes and pressed the raisons to produce a straw wine. We’ll keep you up to date on how that develops.
Along with all the beautiful aromas, concentrated flavours and relief that all of the grapes are finally safely tucked away in the cellar, we have to take our hat off to the grape farmers affected by the draught. 2016 saw lower yields with smaller bunches and berries. Some farmers experienced up to 60% lower yields than last year. We also take our hat off to all of the farmers and wineries who lost vineyards due to fires in the Western Cape this year.
Looking to the future we are very excited about what this year holds.
Our first MCC bubbly (100% Chenin Blanc) was disgorged on the fourth of March & we are super excited to see that dream come true! Watch out for its release around May!
Keep on drinking beautiful wine. Order yours here.
